I was a little surprised to see these eggs at Whole Foods this weekend. Hasn't it been ages since there was a Bread and Circus around? I mean, the eggs tasted fresh, but still...
They probably just found the old containers somewhere. Whole Foods owned Bread & Circus for a good decade before converting all the stores to the Whole Foods name around 2002 or 2003.
In high school, I worked at a Purity Supreme store that was converted to a Star Market (and later Shaw's). There were still occasional Purity items (particularly in the bakery for some reason) a good 5 years after it stopped being called Purity.
Thanks, Tape. I realize that, but it hasn't been Bread and Circus for 5 years (despite what many locals may still call it). Were there that many surplus egg crates hanging around?
Could it be that there is a national conspiricy against egg farmers. The company may be delibertly doing this due to their concerens about the malitious treatment of the birds that are laying the eggs. They are putting new eggs in aged cartons to make the consumers think twice if they really need those eggs. Or it could just be that it is less energy to use unused egg cartons in lieu of recycling them and making new ones. I am curious if there was an expiration date on them. OMG am I going to be ill because i ate the old eggs? AARG!!!
I've definitely seen those cartons at Trader Joe's too. It's so weird. But I guess...at least they're recycling and not just ditching all of the old cartons in a landfill somewhere.

ReplyDeleteYeah, I guess that's the case. We should be happy that they're recycling :)
